The typeface of a thousand lakes

The national font of Finland Finlandica was originally commissioned by the Prime Minister’s Office for the promotion of Finland. Finlandica has since become the default font for many government offices. It’s a functional, clean and dynamic typeface, with small characteristic detailed quirks.

The logo is designed by Hasan & Co, using the Finlandica Headline Typeface. The logo’s clean, minimalist aesthetic embodies Finland’s design heritage, where simplicity meets innovation. The custom typeface lends its personality to the logo, enhancing readability and ensuring a unified look across government communications, international campaigns, and digital platforms. This synergy between typography and logo strengthens brand continuity, making Finland’s visual identity instantly distinguishable. Beyond aesthetics, the branding strategy supports Finland’s international presence in business, culture, and diplomacy. By maintaining a consistent and professional visual language, the design system fosters trust and recognition, reinforcing Finland’s reputation for excellence in design and innovation. Whether used in official documents, trade promotions, or tourism initiatives, this carefully crafted identity helps Finland stand out in a competitive global landscape.
Finlandica strikes a balance between formality and warmth, embodying the Finnish design ethos of precision with a human touch. Its structure is formal and well-proportioned, ensuring clarity and reliability in all applications. Yet, its rounded geometries introduce a friendly, approachable character, softening its otherwise rigid framework. Sharp details give it a crisp, refined look, but subtle inktraps—reminiscent of cuts made by a blunt axe—add a raw, organic quality. These deliberate imperfections inject personality into the typeface, reflecting Finland’s blend of precision and rugged craftsmanship, where functional design meets an appreciation for the natural, imperfect beauty of handmade work.
The official typeface of Finland designed by Helsinki Type Studio. The project is now managed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
